At first glance, they appear to be figures caught midmovement,graceful, poised, and alive with rhythm. Only on closer observation does their true purpose reveal itself.

These remarkable objects, crafted in 19thcentury Jaipur, are in fact wine flasks, ingeniously disguised as dancing figures. To the uninitiated, they read purely as sculpture,celebrations of movement and form. Yet hidden within their elegance is a functional design: the vessels are filled discreetly through the headdress and poured from the raised right hand, where liquid flows as if becoming part of the gesture itself.

Each figure stands upon a circular plinth adorned with foliage patterns, grounding the composition while enhancing its decorative richness. Their stance and swirling posture evoke the classical dance tradition of Kathak, a form known for its intricate footwork and expressive spins. The dancer’s attire, particularly the voluminous, pleated skirt, plays a central role in this visual language. The greater the number of pleats, the more dramatic the movement,each whirl and turn transforming fabric into a dynamic spectacle.

Here, that sense of motion is captured in stillness. The sculpted folds suggest rotation, as if the figures are forever suspended in the midst of a spin. The act of pouring becomes an extension of the dance itself,gesture and function seamlessly intertwined.
